Nafisa is a Uighur woman who lives and works in Tokyo as an assistant director. Life is steady with her live-in Japanese boyfriend, Hirosawa, a cinematographer. He increasingly pushes for them to get married but Naifsa defers answering, content to keep things as they are. Fate, however, pushes her to make a decision when hermother calls with news that her beloved grandfather has fallen ill and reveals that they are worried about her marriage prospects. Concerned about her boyfriend’s background, Nafisa lies about his background to her mother…
Writer/director OSAKO Muki skillfully approaches themes of cultural, religious, and ethnic differences through Nafisa’s increasingly conflicted feelings and actions. How she overcomes these tensions is captured in a thematically clever and beautifully shot resolution.
