Soyoko
爽子の衝動
Soyoko is a 19-year-old girl with ADHD who clings on to dreams of studying at an art school while juggling a part-time job and caring for her disabled father. As overburdened caregivers quit around her and with no relatives to help, Soyoko desperately applies for welfare but a callous caseworker makes increasingly awful demands for funds leading a vulnerable and isolated Soyoko into a terrible situation.
In his portrait of Soyoko, TODA Akihiro paints a bleak picture of Japan’s stagnant welfare system and raises viewer awareness of how it forces people to struggle without support.

Made in collaboration with the actor training school Polar Star Tokyo Academy in a project called B.A.P (Boost Actor Project), FURUSAWA Mei delivers a heart-rending performance with support from veteran actors like KUROSAWA Asuka, UMEDA Masahiro, and MASE Hidemasa, winner of the Best Actor award at OAFF 2020 for his role in KONTORA.
