Before Anyone Else
Japan Premiere
MARIKO Tetsuya of Destruction Babies (2016) and From Miyamoto to You (2019) fame travels from Japan to the streets of Chicago to tell a deeply atmospheric tale of self-destructive youth and misguided love in desperate circumstances.
Jimmy and Lex are two small-time skateboarding hoodlums and lovers who bear the scars of broken childhoods. After this modern-day low-rent Bonnie and Clyde knock over a pawn shop and skate off into the smog-filled distance, they have a fateful encounter with an abandoned car in an empty lot. Inside the car are two things: a small child in the backseat and a gun in the glove compartment. Events soon spiral out of control as they bicker over what to do and drama builds. A viewer’s eyes will be rooted to the gun while their hearts break for two people, too damaged to become adults, who place the child in jeopardy. [Jason MAHER]
