The Land of Morning Calm
아침바다 갈매기는
日本初上映 Japan Premiere
A young fisherman named Yong-su pulls an insurance scam by pretending to go overboard while fishing late at night. Hs Vietnamese wife will receive a payout and with that, they will take his mother and escape their closed-minded fishing town and restart in Vietnam. The one person he ropes into his scheme is his crotchety captain, Yeong-guk, but it goes awry as Yong-su’s mother refuses to believe he has disappeared and Yeong-guk has to face her…

Following The Girl on a Bulldozer, PARK Ri-woong continues examining the travails of working-class Koreans but takes a tiny fishing community as his canvas. With a naturalistic approach, PARK depicts real-world issues of prejudice and declining living standards, and gives viewers a fascinatingly complicated main character in Yeong-guk for a compelling drama.

The Land of Morning Calm, won the New Currents Award, KB New Currents Audience Award, and NETPAC Award at the 29th Busan International Film Festival.
