It is the summer of 2003 and the SARS epidemic is easing so school resumes but this doesn’t ease the loneliness of Hau-ching, it sharpens it. When she overhears her class crush complimenting another girl on her glasses, she tries various tricks to become short-sighted to get glasses and capture his gaze. Ironically, her efforts bring into focus her fraying family ties, particularly those with her mother whose night-time absences grow more disturbing.
Director CHUNG Yik-ching roots us in Hau-ching’s poignant search for love and companionship by contrasting the innocent appeals for attention in a bustling classroom with the messy relationships of adults and skilfully interweaving them together at a magical night-time finale when people truly look at her and see her.
