The Midnight Sun
折にふれて
Fumi is about to turn 20 and has reached the limit of her patience living in her family home. Caught between the overwhelming presence of her doting father and the ghostly absence of her hikikomori brother Mucchan, she wrestles with embarrassment, sympathy, and worry daily. Just as freedom approaches, these feelings cannot be suppressed and a seaside town emerges from her dreams. It is a place where the sun always shines, the sky has no limits, and Muccahn is there in the form of a happy-go-lucky girl Fumi can talk to.
MURATA Hina’s film vividly captures the paradoxical feelings of family love cinematically by alternating between Fumi’s stifling quotidian reality and colourful fantasy. Along with HONDA Sakiko’s lively acting, the film bursts with a sense of aching poignancy and hope.
