The female trainees in Dorm 7 at a Malaysia National Service camp are awoken just before midnight and summoned by their instructor to gather. A complaint has been made: a dirty sanitary pad was left in a toilet. The punishment is to clean up. The resulting experience strains the harmony amongst this multi-ethnic group but a begrudging camaraderie based on gender and shared hardship is also glimpsed.

LAI’s film brims with tension as the differences between trainees from different backgrounds are brought to the fore due to vivid acting by a strong cast, all while a critique of the irrationality of the situation is sharpened by the black-and-white shooting style which enhances the humiliation…
